A single girder bridge crane uses one main girder instead of two, with the trolley and hoist running on the bottom flange of that girder. That single beam design uses less steel, which lowers material cost, freight cost and installation cost compared to a double girder crane of the same capacity.
The tradeoff is capacity and span. Single girder cranes are best suited to light and medium duty work, typically under 32 tons, rather than heavy continuous duty cycles. For most workshops, maintenance bays and warehouses, that tradeoff works in your favor since you are not paying for structure you will never use.
